2010 Season - Week 17
Most Exciting Chase for the Papas Fritas Trophy Ever?
In a thrilling finish to the season, all 3 of the protagonists led at some point of the evening as the name on the Papas Fritas Trophy changed SEVEN times in a four hour span. Johnnie went into the evening with a 10 point lead but when Tom Brady threw his second TD pass 3:24 into the third quarter Chief moved to the top. Wayne led the Premiership by four points on Jacoby Ford’s TD with 11 minutes left in the Oakland game. Chief replied with six points from Mike Smith when Atlanta won and led Johnnie and Wayne by just two points after the early games. Johnnie bounced back when Arian Foster scored just two minutes into the late games for a four point lead only for Chief to re-take the lead on a second field goal by Rob Bironas and a TD from Larry Fitzgerald, both seven minutes from half-time. That lead lasted for an hour until Johnnie responded with 4 minutes left in the third quarter as Chris Johnson scored for Tennessee. In the fourth quarter Foster, Aaron Rodgers and Mason Crosby all added to the Binty Bombers total. By the final whistle the engraver was exhausted and Johnnies name appears on the trophy for the third time equalling the record of Wayne. Johnnie won the Inaugural Papas Fritas back in 1995 and again last year making him the third owner to have won back-to-back Championships (Mark in 1999 and 2000 and Wayne in 2003 and 2004). Amazingly Johnnie drafted none of the eight players in his team, even his two Franchise players were trading day pick ups.
Mark the Carpenter
It was a Bowden double as Mark won the Conference. He claimed to have only got relegated last year so he could “complete the cabinet”, yeah right. Anyway his cabinet is complete having previously won the Papas Fritas Trophy in 1999 and 2000 and BUMSBowl III in 1998. He joins Daz as the only other person to have won all three. Mark beat David S by 74 points, the second highest margin of victory in the Conference, Ron beat Wayne by 106 points in 2006. Co-incidentally that was the year Stampy was relegated so he returns to the Big League after 3 years of finishing in the bottom two. They are joined by Ron who rode Ryan Matthews 3 TDs to a 29 point week as he held off Dave G whose late surge faltered in the final week of the season.
Going Down
With Cheryl and Daz already 50 points from safety the battle was all about who would join them in the Conference next year. In the end George couldn’t overcome his 10 point deficit and after just one season in the Premiership he returns to the Minor League, where he spent his first four BUMS seasons.
